Yikes! Devils Captain Injured During International Play
The New Jersey Devils season might be over, but they suffer another injury as Nico Hischier is sidelined during international play.

This is always the fear for management and fans alike when players opt to go play in world tournaments. For the New Jersey Devils, the fear is now a reality, as captain Nico Hischier appears to have suffered an injury playing in the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
In the first period against Germany on Thursday morning, Nico Hischier took an awkward spill, falling on forward Joshua Samanski, that saw him slow to his feet.
Here’s the play Hischier got shaken up on.

Hischier appears to have suffered a lower-body injury, although the extent of the injury is currently unknown. He stayed on Team Switzerland’s bench for the remainder of the first period, but didn’t take any further shifts after skating in his first 5:12.
The news turned from bad to worse, raising the level of concern when Hischier did not reemerge from the locker room for the second period of the game.
Devils & Swiss teammate, Timo Meier took over center duties in Hischier’s absence. He contributed to Sven Andrighetto goal as the net-front presence, distracting the German goaltender to extend Switzerland’s lead to 2-0.
If Hischier’s injury that took him out of Thursday’s contests costs him any further time, he’ll be added to a long list of Devils who are recovering from injuries this summer.
Such list include, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Luke Hughes, and Johnathan Kovacevic.
The Devils’ stars have taken a beating over the last two years. And it’s not the first time Hischier has suffered an injury during international play.
Certainly, the players are never going to turn down the chance at an opportunity to wear their countries colors. However, it’s fair to wonder when NHL teams could step in to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.
