Devils Seeking ‘Long-Term’ Extension With Jacob Markstrom | Report
According to a recent report, the New Jersey Devils are seeking a long-term contract extension with Jacob Markstrom.
No, the recent injury Jacob Marsktrom suffered, nor the slow start to the 2025-26 season, have not deterred the New Jersey Devils from seeking an extension with the 35-year-old goaltender. In fact, according to a new report, they’re looking to sign Markstrom long-term.

Markstrom suffered a lower-body injury in New Jersey’s tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday late in the third period. Ironically, he was relieving Jake Allen, who was pulled after 40 minutes of play for cramps.
Before Markstrom became injured, he appeared unsettled in the crease in the first two games of the season with a combined .837 SV%, allowing eight goals against on 41 shots between the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning. And although he only let up one goal on nine shots against the Blue Jackets, he appeared to make simple saves look more difficult.
Yet, on the latest TSN Insider Trading, Darren Dreger reports the Devils are seeking a long-term marriage with Markstrom, and the Swedish goaltender’s feelings are mutual.
“They’ve exchanged some ideas. They’ve had recent discussions on what an extension might look like,” Dreger said. “I’m told that the talks have been healthy and that they will resume the negotiations in the near future. There is a mutual interest with the veteran goaltender and the New Jersey Devils to get something done. I’m told the Devils absolutely love Jacob Markstrom, he’s great in the room. But, there is a negotiation that still has to take place here. So, with everything, there’s always a gap. Until that gap closes, the deal isn’t done.”
It comes as no surprise that the Devils are interested in bringing back Jacob Markstrom long-term. They did so with fellow veteran goaltender, Jake Allen, who signed a five-year contract extension over the summer. However, he took a very team-friendly salary.
We’ll see how friendly Markstrom is feeling in his negotiations with the Devils.
