NJHN Daily: Devils Avoid Worst-Case; NHL at Olympics in Jeopardy?
Well, wouldn’t that certainly be something. Could the Olympics be in jeopardy of losing NHL talent at their games? It appears there’s a snag in the road to get to Milan, which could force New Jersey Devils and NHL players alike to remain in North America in February.
In New Jersey, the Devils avoid the worst-case scenario with their goaltending. Yes, there’s an injury, but at least it’s not two.
Even Sheldon Keefe put an optimistic twist on it, explaining they could have lost one goaltender for longer than they are. More on that below.
Elsewhere, way too early Calder Trophy talk, other injury notes, and more.
Let’s do that hockey.
Devils Trade Rumors & News
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils got their answer after Monday’s tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets left questions in net. Jake Allen is okay, but the Devils needed to call up Nico Daws. Why? Jacob Markstrom is going to miss some time.
More NJHN: This is what you want to see. Devils forward, Arseny Gritsyuk, is making early noise in the Calder Trophy race, jumping significantly in the odds.
The Athletic ($): We’re not the only ones putting Gritsyuk in the Calder conversation.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
The Athletic ($): With several NHLers gathering for the Canadian Olympic orientation camp over the summer, the message was simple. It’s not going to be an experience like at the Ritz-Carlton at the Milano-Cortina Athletes’ Village.
APNews: That is, of course, if the NHL even makes it to the Olympics. That’s right, the world games could be in jeopardy due to a construction issue that may lead to untested ice, which puts the players at risk. This could be a catastrophe.
San Jose Hockey Now: In Michael Misa’s NHL debut, the San Jose Sharks were blown out of the water by the Carolina Hurricanes, no pun intended. So, where do they go from here?
Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers suffered another huge blow on Wednesday. Ex-Devils defenseman, Dmitry Kulikov, is going to be out long-term.
Vegas Hockey Now: It’s a bad time to be a goaltender, apparently. Vegas Golden Knights goaltender, Adin Hill, has also suffered an injury. Bruce Cassidy and the Knights are still assessing the severity of the injury.
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers are going to have some choices to make regarding their blueline, and those choices have to be made soon. One player they shouldn’t decide on is Emil Andre. Will James says he belongs.
Detroit Hockey Now: The Detroit Red Wings lost a top player on Tuesday. Yet, it’s good news on Wednesday for Lucas Raymond.
Montreal Hockey Now: If anyone is going to give Gritsyuk a run for his money, it’s Ivan Demidov. The Montreal Canadiens forward stole the show on Tuesday.
Chicago Hockey Now: We’re all thinking of Nick Foligno and his family. The Chicago Blackhawks announced their captain is taking a leave of absence to tend to his daughter’s health.
