Timo Meier Switches Jersey Number to No.28 for the Devils

Ever since Damon Severson departed to the Columbus Blue Jackets, many of you wondered if Timo Meier might wear No.28 again.

When the New Jersey Devils acquired Meier before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, No.28 wasn’t available. Instead, the Swiss forward reverted back to No.96, a number he wore in Major Junior.

After Meier signed his eight-year extension to remain in New Jersey, he hadn’t even thought about changing his jersey number. However, after he was asked, it lodged the thought in his brain.

“I haven’t really made that decision to be honest,” Meier told the media in June. “There was too much stuff going on. But, that’s something I might have to think about now that you mention it. I like No.96. Obviously, I had No.28 for a long time in San Jose, but No.96 was kind of a number that I had before. So I don’t know. I guess I have to make that decision shortly.”

It took a little longer than “shortly.” We’re now just two days away from training camp toward the end of September. However, the question is answered. Meier will return to No.28, the number he started his NHL career with.

Interestingly enough, he wears that number for a reason.

“I talked to my friends and family and was like ‘What do you guys think’, and most of the people said 28,” Meier told NHL dot com. “They think 96 looks better on me, but 28 for me is more what I’ve done (in the NHL), for me in the NHL, it’s my number, it’s kind of brought me luck.”

For those of you who own No.96 Meier jerseys, don’t fret. Here’s what the organization had to say about how to get a No.28 if you so please:

“Devils’ right winger, Timo Meier, currently #96, has made the decision to change his jersey number to #28 for the 2023-24 season and beyond. Timo will partner with the New Jersey Devils to provide fans with the opportunity to wear their #96 Timo jerseys to the Devils Den and receive a 28% discount on their purchase of a new #28 Timo jersey within the first 2 weeks of the regular season. The first 128 fans to purchase a #28 Timo jersey will receive a Timo-signed puck.”

“Timo will also match 28% of all #28 Jersey sales from the first 2 weeks of the regular season in a donation to Hockey in New Jersey.”

“Members of Hockey in NJ will be invited to a future open practice on behalf of Timo and have the opportunity to meet him afterward”

It’s gonna be a big year for the Devils’ new No.28.
