According to a report, New Jersey Devils forward Tyler Toffoli is drawing a lot of interest and is “in play” for a potential trade.

On Tuesday morning, general manager Tom Fitzgerald was direct that he was not shopping the Devils’ leading goal scorer. However, Fitzgerald also disclosed there’s certainly been interest in the veteran winger.

“I’m not shopping Tyler Toffoli,” he told reporters. “Tyler and I sat together in L.A. [during the Devils’ road trip last week], we had a great talk. Tyler knows how much I’d like to bring him back. But unfortunately right now there’s a possible term difference [in negotiation]. That doesn’t mean we can’t revisit this past the deadline if he’s still there, or in the offseason.

“But the reality is, teams have called on him. And what a return looks like, I wouldn’t be giving away a player, my leading scorer, just to gain future assets. But the reality is, those future assets could help us down the road. I’ll know more in the next three days where we’re at.”

Fast forward to another loss for the Devils and a handful of days later, TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that things have changed and Toffoli is in play on the trade market.

“Amid all of the action today, be clear Tyler Toffoli is in play. The Devils are open to return in the way of multiple picks or a pick and a prospect,” Dreger tweeted.

Pierre LeBrun added to Dreger’s report that nothing is imminent at this time.

This news came on the back of a Noah Hanifin deal that saw the former Calgary Flames defenseman head to the Vegas Golden Knights, as well as a few other big names moving around on the trade market.

Later Tuesday evening, Anthony Mantha was acquired by the Golden Knights in exchange for a 2nd-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a 4th-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to the Washington Capitals. Earlier on Wednesday, Vladimir Tarasenko netted the Ottawa Senators a conditional 4th-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a 3rd-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, although Tarasenko had a say in his final destination due to trade protection.

The belief is that Toffoli could likely net more than what the aforementioned wingers were acquired for. Perhaps, that could be ammunition used by Fitzgerald in a later deal to retrieve the Devils the goaltender — Jacob Markstrom, anybody — they’ve been searching for.

Toffoli is a pending free agent with a $4.25 million cap hit. In 61 games this season, Toffoli’s netted 26 goals and 44 points.

Word is, Vegas isn’t done dealing and they’re interested in the Devils forward.
