George Parros and the NHL Department of Player Safety assessed New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe a four-game suspension for his illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.

Rempe (21) took part in his 10th NHL game against the Devils on Monday, his second against the Devils this season. In the last meeting between the division rivals on March 22nd at the Prudential Center, Rempe hit Nathan Bastian with another questionable check and was assessed a match penalty just 2:25 into the first period.

Following the hit to Bastian, Siegenthaler attempted to step up to Rempe, however, was promptly taken out by the massive Rangers rookie.

On Monday night in the middle of play toward the end of the second period, Rempe made head contact with his elbow to the head of Siegenthaler. He was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the incident.

Siegenthaler did not return for the third period of the Devils’ 3-1 loss.

Following the loss, the Devils certainly expressed their displeasure, citing the dirty hit and Rempe’s refusal to answer the call for his actions.

“I don’t like the hit at all,” Jesper Bratt explained. “I mean you can see that he’s coming in with an elbow. Obviously, what happens after that is [Kurtis MacDermid] protecting [Siegenthaler], and [Rempe] didn’t want it. That’s that’s how it is. I mean, we’re having a guy out there back us up and do his job and, I don’t know, I guess they didn’t want it.”

The DoPS explained Rempe’s suspension as follows:

“Rempe chooses to flare his elbow both up and away from his body in dangerous fashion, driving it directly into the head of Siegenthaler with substantial force.”

The DoPS cited Siegenthaler’s injury factored into the decision.
