Devils Daily: Massive Game vs. Sabres; Maurice Angry with Panthers

Thursday night’s out-of-town scoreboard went very well for the New Jersey Devils.

The Devils are chasing the Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers down the stretch and all three lost in regulation to their respective opponents. The only thing that could have made it better was if the Florida Panthers didn’t give head coach Paul Maurice a fit while losing to the New York Islanders.

More on that later.

The Devils are in Buffalo to face the Sabres tonight. A win pulls them within three points of the second wildcard spot in the playoffs with eight games remaining as of Saturday. Suffice it to say, it’s a huge game tonight.

In the links, in case you missed it, Vitek Vanecek’s first comment in San Jose is that he doesn’t want to talk about New Jersey.

Elsewhere, Paul Maurice makes it clear he’s unhappy with Florida, The Great One praises Nathan Mackinnon, and Philly gets their Russian goaltender back.

Let’s do that hockey.

The Score: According to reports, the Ottawa Senators have a short list of head coaching candidates to speak with this summer, including Dean Evason and Craig Berube.

Colorado Hockey Now: There’s a legitimate debate about who should win the Hart Trophy at the end of the 2023-24 season. The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, chimed in on where he thinks Nathan Mackinnon should rank in the race.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers are sputtering a bit as of late. After their lose to the Islanders on Saturday, head coach Paul Maurice was not happy with his team despite the out-of-town scoreboard allowing Florida to clinch a playoff spot. “I don’t feel like talking about good things right now. Write whatever you want, today is free quote (expletive) day. Take whatever you think I might say and use it.”

Philly Hockey Now: Multiple reports confirm that Russian goaltender Ivan Fedotov has had his KHL contract terminated and he’s making his way overseas to play with the Philadelphia Flyers.
