We still have plenty of time until the NHL Trade Deadline. However, the insiders are making their predictions before the New Year, and there’s certainly an interesting New Jersey Devils trade proposition that I’m hesitant to believe was pulled out of thin air.

More on that in the links.

Elsewhere, ex-Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood cashes in, inevitable Isles trade, and Detroit’s thoughts on the coaching change.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Jacob Markstrom’s marquee night propels the New Jersey Devils to victory in the first of a home-and-home with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Athletic ($): In part two of The Athletic’s NHL trade matchmaker, Pierre LeBrun matches an intriguing forward to the Devils.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Colorado Hockey Now: That certainly didn’t take long. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood has been with the Colorado Avalanche for all of four games. The Avalanche signed the ex-Devils netminder to a big ticket on Friday.

San Jose Hockey Now: Blackwood was only traded to the Avalanche just 18 days before he signed a new, long-term contract to remain in Colorado. Here’s why the San Jose Sharks made the right call by moving Blackwood.

NYI Hockey Now: It sure is surprising to see the national media talking about the New York Islanders given that virtually nothing leaks from Lou Lamoriello. However, they’re claiming that a Brock Nelson trade is almost inevitable. Could Kyle Palmieri follow? And hey, wouldn’t one, or both of those players look good in red and black, especially given the fact that Palmieri was already a member of the black and red family?

Detroit Hockey Now: When asked if they felt a coaching change was necessary, the Detroit Red Wings locker room—including the captain—didn’t necessarily say no.

I certainly wouldn’t be upset with getting Tanev but far from what we really need. We need a #3C. Whether that means pushing Haula down to the 4th line or trading him he’s flat out the biggest weakness on the team. He can’t drive a line & that’s what we need. Anyone put on a line with him craters. I’d rather try Dowling at #3C than keep going with Haula. If we were to add Tanev he’d just crater next to Haula. Tanev might be a great penalty killer but when we’re putting Jack, Bratt, Nico, Mercer on the PK we don’t have a need for another penalty killer.

The way this defense is playing & the goaltending we’re getting Fitzy needs to go for it. Brock Nelson is the perfect fit. He’s a plus defensively. If Jack or Nico miss some time he can legitimately fill in. We’d have a major issue if we lost 1 right now. If he really fits in a 2yr extension would be awesome. He’s been a clutch playoff performer. He can drive a line making his wings better instead of dragging them down. He’s 6’4″ 210lbs. Definitely could help our 2nd PP unit. Since Keefe’s wanted offense on the PK if Jack, Bratt, Nico, or Mercer are in the box he’d be a good PK option. He’s got 2 shorthanded goals this year & had 1 last year. He had a shorthanded assist last year.

We’ve got more than enough assets to make this trade happen. If we make Haula part of the trade & do it ASAP then NYI might be able to flip him at the deadline. 50% retained with Haula gone would be the same Cap hit. Get rid of Tatar at $1.8 & get Tanev with 50% retained & it’s the same Cap hit

Palat Jack Bratt
Timo Nico Noesen
Tanev Nelson Mercer
Cotter Lazar Bastian

Tell me that’s not a Cup winning roster
