BREAKING: Devils Nico Hischier Injured, Leaves Game vs. Canadiens
New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier suffers an injury to the mid-section and leaves the game against the Montreal Canadiens.
When it rains, it pours. The New Jersey Devils are already dealing with an injury to their No.1 goaltender. Add another injury to the list, as the Devils captain left the third period of New Jersey’s tilt with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

In the second period of a 3-1 game in favor of the Devils, Nico Hischier took a cross-check to the mid-section by Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki. Suzuki wasn’t called for the infraction, and instead, the Canadiens skated the puck up to the New Jersey’s end of the ice and Cole Caufield cut the Devils’ lead to 3-2.
Montreal goal!
Scored by Cole Caufield with 02:55 remaining in the 2nd period.

Hischier was seen laboring on the bench in pain afterward, holding what looked like his ribs, talking to a trainer.
The Devils took another quick shift before the second period ended, leaving the ice well before his linemates ended their shift.
Hischier emerged from the New Jersey’s locker room for the start of the third period. His line started the period, however, whereas Hischier typically takes the face-off as the center, Stefan Noesen took the draw instead, while the Devils captain lined up on the wing.
It was clear he was in pain, and after the single third period shift, Hischier left the bench and headed to the locker room.
The Devils can ill afford any further serious injuries, and losing their leading goalscorer would certainly come as a major blow.
Hischier leads New Jersey in goals with 24, and is third on the team with 42 points, behind Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt respectively.
After New Jersey’s 4-3 overtime victory, head coach Sheldon Keefe said he expects Hischier to be “day-to-day.”
